Health benefit plans delivered, issued, or renewed on or after January 1, 2017 must provide coverage for diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other disorders listed in the DSM.

Covered treatment includes inpatient hospitalization, partial hospitalization, residential care, intensive outpatient treatment, outpatient care, counseling, and prescribed medications.

Coverage is limited to medically necessary treatment provided by licensed physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, professional counselors, clinical social workers, or marital and family therapists acting within their scope of practice.

Medical necessity determinations must consider overall medical and mental health needs, cannot be based solely on weight, and must reference the American Psychiatric Association's Practice Guideline for Treatment of Patients with Eating Disorders.

Excludes supplemental insurance policies such as accident-only, specified disease, Medicare supplement, long-term care, and short-term major medical policies of six months or less duration.
