Fire protection district and ambulance district board members are prohibited from being employed by their respective boards within 12 months of leaving board service, unless the employment is volunteer or uncompensated.

Fire protection districts serving areas annexed by cities with fire departments after August 28, 2015 retain full taxing authority; the annexing city cannot levy property taxes on that annexed property.

For annexations completed before August 28, 2015, a phased transition occurs from 2016-2020 where the annexing city's payments to fire districts decrease from 80% to 0% while the district's direct taxation authority increases from 20% to 100%.

Filing fees for fire protection district director candidates are increased from $10 to match the amount required for county office candidates under section 115.357.

Residents of areas annexed on or after May 26, 1994 may vote in fire protection district elections and serve on district boards.
