Senators and representatives are prohibited from holding compensated positions in any for-profit or not-for-profit organization that employs registered lobbyists, with violation resulting in removal from office by impeachment.

Legislators are barred from personally acting as a lobbyist, registering as a lobbyist, or soliciting lobbying clients during their term of office.

First-time violations of the personal lobbying prohibition constitute a class B misdemeanor; second or subsequent violations are a class E felony (class D felony until December 31, 2016).

An exception allows legislators to maintain employment with firms that employ registered lobbyists if those lobbyists serve primarily on behalf of the firm's clients rather than the legislator's interests.
