Pica is an eating disorder characterized by persistent cravings and compulsive consumption of non-food substances such as chalk, hair, dirt, sand, and household cleaners

The disorder most commonly affects people with developmental disabilities including autism, children ages 2-3, pregnant women, and those with epilepsy, brain injuries, or nutritional deficiencies

Health consequences include iron-deficiency anemia, lead poisoning, bowel obstruction, and death

Citizens are encouraged to wear orange during November to raise awareness of the disorder
