School boards must inspect and test all protective door assemblies (panic hardware doors, exit enclosure doors, electrically controlled egress doors, and special locking doors) every 12 months by a qualified inspector to confirm proper operation and full closure.

Doors installed in 2015 or after must comply with 2015 NFPA 101 Life Safety Code standards; doors installed earlier must meet the NFPA 101 or building code standards in effect at their installation date.

Non-compliant door assemblies must be repaired and re-inspected, with school boards required to maintain annual inspection records.

Beginning January 1, 2028, the authority having jurisdiction will annually inspect school board records and may issue citations for non-compliant doors not addressed within 18 months (or 180 days for serious fire/life safety hazards); citations must be posted on the school board's public website.

No civil penalties or fines may be assessed for citations, and school boards actively working toward compliance are exempt from citations.
