Employers with 10 or more employees in Missouri must provide at least 3 days of bereavement leave upon the death of an employee's pet, with at least 1 day paid

"Pet" is defined as domesticated animals kept for companionship, including dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other legally allowed household pets

Employees may take leave consecutively or nonconsecutively within 30 days of the pet's death, and employers may require documentation such as a veterinarian's certificate

Employers are prohibited from retaliating, disciplining, or discriminating against employees who request or take pet bereavement leave

The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations is authorized to promulgate rules for administration and enforcement, with any rules proposed after August 28, 2026 subject to chapter 536 provisions
