• Grants hospitals a lien on all claims and damages recovered by patients for injuries or illnesses that required hospital care, including settlements, insurance benefits, and wrongful death claims.

• Hospital lien is subordinate to attorney's liens and does not apply to workers' compensation injuries.

• Requires hospitals to file liens in the circuit court clerk's office of the county where the hospital is located, including verified statement with patient name, admission/discharge dates, amount claimed, and liable parties' information.

• Prohibits satisfaction of judgments, awards, or settlements without first notifying the healthcare provider and satisfying the hospital lien.

• Takes effect July 1, 2010.
