Oil and gas wells must be located at least 1,000 feet from any inhabited house or occupied barn unless the landowner consents to a closer location.

Well operators are required to pay for any damage caused by drilling operations to buildings, improvements, commercial timber, and growing crops on leased or adjacent lands.

Well locations must comply with the 1,000-foot distance requirement in addition to existing spacing patterns and regulations established by the State Oil and Gas Board.

Section 1 of the bill is to be codified in Title 53, Chapter 3 of the Mississippi Code of 1972.

The act takes effect July 1, 2010.
