Newton High School "Lady Tigers" won the MHSAA Class 2A State Championship with a 77-73 victory over New Site, finishing the season with a 31-3 record.

Junior guard Sha'kara Edwards led the team with 20 points in the championship game, with senior Tineshia Evans adding 19 points including three 3-pointers in the third quarter.

Head Coach Crandal Porter claimed his third state title, having previously won a girls championship at Newton in 2005 and a boys title in 2008.

Newton defeated Shelby Broad Street 99-36 in the semifinals, with the 99 points setting a new record for Class 2A semifinals, surpassing Shaw's 98 points scored in 1988.

The resolution commends and congratulates the team, coaches, and staff for their outstanding season and directs the resolution be presented to Head Coach Porter and Principal Sherrod Miller.
