Commends Lamar County School District for meeting the Healthier US School Challenge and earning national recognition for improving child health and nutrition.

District earned five Gold Awards (Sumrall Elementary, Sumrall Middle, Oak Grove Lower Elementary, Oak Grove Upper Elementary, Oak Grove Middle) and six Gold Awards of Distinction (Baxterville Attendance Center, Oak Grove Primary, Purvis Lower Elementary, Purvis Upper Elementary, Purvis Middle, Purvis High).

Schools qualified by creating healthier environments, promoting nutrition and physical activity, featuring healthy menu items, and emphasizing physical education.

Gold Award recipients receive $1,500 and Gold Award of Distinction recipients receive $2,000, along with plaques, banners, and listing on the USDA Team Nutrition website.

USDA Deputy Undersecretary Dr. Janey Thornton scheduled to present official awards on December 9, 2011, at three celebration locations in Purvis, Hattiesburg, and Sumrall.
