MS SB2442

Amends Mississippi Code sections 97-3-25, 97-3-35, and 97-3-47 to create distinct classifications for voluntary and involuntary manslaughter based on whether the killing was intentional or accidental/negligent.

Voluntary manslaughter applies to intentional killings without malice in heat of passion or by intentional act of another; punishable by 5-40 years imprisonment and $2,000-$20,000 fine.

Involuntary manslaughter applies to accidental or negligent killings without malice or by unintentional act and culpable negligence; punishable by 2-20 years imprisonment and $1,000-$10,000 fine.

Becomes effective July 1, 2011.
