Motor vehicle owners must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal alien status to obtain or renew license tags, with proof presented in person or by mail to the tax collector.

Once an owner has presented adequate proof of citizenship, no further proof is required for future license tag transactions.

The Department of Revenue will establish the specific evidence or documentation required to demonstrate citizenship or legal alien status.

Presenting false evidence of citizenship or legal alien status is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $500 and imprisonment for up to one year.

The act takes effect January 1, 2012.
