Will Owen (Bill) McCallum passed away on March 7, 2011, at age 93 after a lifetime of military and public service in Mississippi.

Served in U.S. Army during World War II with the 29th Infantry Division, landing at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, and earning the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and other medals; later served in Mississippi Army National Guard and retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1970.

Elected Mayor of New Hebron in 1981 and reelected for four additional terms, securing improvements including a new library, waterline upgrades, fire truck, upgraded fire rating, water well, t-ball/softball fields, and assisted in bringing industry to the town.

Served as Alderman of New Hebron in the 1950s, Lawrence County Board of Education member (1957-1966), President of Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce (1986-1987), and on multiple state and local boards and commissions.

Legislature extends sympathy to surviving family members and thanks for McCallum's distinguished military and public service to the state of Mississippi.
