HB 1394 Summary

• Amends Section 9-9-11 to revise county judge salaries to be calculated based on the salary of United States Magistrates instead of fixed dollar amounts.

• Amends Section 25-3-35 to tie salaries of Supreme Court justices, Court of Appeals judges, chancery judges, and circuit judges to 75% of comparable federal judicial salaries (U.S. Supreme Court justices, U.S. Court of Appeals judges for the Fifth Circuit, and U.S. District Court judges).

• Establishes that these revised salary calculations apply upon commencement of the next term of office following passage.

• Requires the Mississippi Attorney General to submit the act to the U.S. Attorney General or U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for review under the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

• Makes the act effective upon approval under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
