Mississippi Building Code Council must submit a report to the Legislature by December 1, 2012, to be considered during the 2013 Regular Session with findings and recommendations for mandatory statewide minimum building codes.

Council must recommend mandatory statewide codes from one of the last three editions of the International Building Code, International Residential Code (IRC), or other codes addressing electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire, and fuel gas matters.

The council maintains its 11-member composition representing architects, general contractors, manufactured housing, building officials, home builders, contractors, engineers, municipal leagues, county supervisors, and the State Fire Marshal as ex officio nonvoting member.

Council cannot mandate fire sprinkler systems in one- or two-family dwellings, but counties and municipalities may adopt such requirements if they choose.

Act becomes effective July 1, 2012.
