Amends Mississippi Code Section 93-5-24 to expand custody and visitation restrictions for parents with histories of violent behavior, including those convicted of or charged with serious violent crimes.

Creates a rebuttable presumption that sole or joint custody of a parent with a history of perpetrating family violence is detrimental to the child; presumption can only be overcome by preponderance of evidence.

Establishes that courts may award visitation to a parent with domestic violence history only if adequate safety provisions can be made, with options including supervised visitation, protected exchanges, counseling requirements, substance abstinence conditions, and prohibition of overnight visitation.

Requires that in cases involving serious violent crimes, courts must give preference to independently supervised visitation or supervision in a controlled setting when allowing family members to supervise visitation.

Takes effect July 1, 2012.
