Sturdivant ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for Governor in 1983 and 1987

Served as Chairman of the State College Board and Board Chairman of Methodist Hospital systems in Memphis, and was Co-Chairman of Jackson-based hotel group Mississippi Management

Received the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America distinguished citizen award for his support of Scouting and community leadership

Senate and House extend sympathy to his surviving family (wife Ygondine, four sons, and one daughter) and recognize his civic contributions and business leadership
