State-supported universities and community colleges receive no state funding for academic remedial or developmental courses for undergraduate students beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year, with limited exceptions.

Institutions must report to their respective boards the high school, school district, and cost information for students receiving remedial education each semester.

The State Department of Education withholds a pro rata amount from the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) distribution to the applicable school district and transfers those funds to the higher education institution to reimburse remedial education costs.

Institutions may continue offering remedial courses beyond state-funded levels but receive no state operating funding for courses beyond what is reimbursed through the withholding mechanism.

The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and Mississippi Community College Board must adopt uniform statewide standards for remedial courses and develop articulation and transfer agreements with nonpublic institutions.
