Insurance companies must furnish motor vehicle liability insurance cards in either paper or electronic format, with the insured choosing the preferred format.

Acceptable electronic formats include display of electronic images on cellular phones or other electronic devices.

Beginning July 1, 2013, commercial auto coverage customers must receive insurance cards clearly marked with "Commercial Auto Insurance," "Fleet," or similar language.

Law enforcement officers can verify insurance cards during traffic stops, but drivers cannot be stopped solely to verify card possession unless part of a roadblock.

Failure to maintain an insurance card in the vehicle is a misdemeanor punishable by a $500 fine and one-year driving privilege suspension, reduced to $100 if proof of insurance is shown at hearing or if insurance was valid at time of citation.
