MS SB2027

Requires Mississippi high schools to teach the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, Federalist Papers, and Emancipation Proclamation during the high school years.

Directs the State Department of Education to develop a civic literacy curriculum and teacher training program to implement the requirement.

Mandates the State Department of Education submit annual reports to the Governor and Legislature beginning in 2015 describing the effectiveness of civic literacy courses.

Establishes legislative findings that these founding documents form the foundation of American democracy and that many Americans lack basic knowledge of these principles.

Takes effect July 1, 2014.
