State Fire Marshall must adopt and administer regulations requiring carbon monoxide detection and warning equipment in all public and nonpublic school buildings, effective July 1, 2014.

Carbon monoxide detection equipment must meet or exceed Underwriter's Laboratories Standard Number 2075, or warning equipment must meet or exceed Standard Number 2034.

State Fire Marshall regulations must specify requirements for testing and inspecting equipment, including frequency of tests and inspections, and mandate compliance with manufacturer instructions and National Fire Protection Association standards.

Battery-operated carbon monoxide warning equipment and plug-in equipment with battery back-up power are prohibited in public and nonpublic schools.

School boards, superintendents, nonpublic school supervisory agents, and their employees are granted liability protection for carbon monoxide detection failures if equipment is installed and maintained according to manufacturer instructions and state regulations.
