Senate Bill 2241 Summary

• Requires bicyclists operating on roadways between sunset and sunrise to be equipped with reflecting and lighting equipment as specified in Section 63-7-11 and to have pedal reflectors or ankle reflectors.

• Modifies the definition of nighttime lighting requirements from "one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise" to "one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise" for all vehicles including bicycles.

• Updates bicycle lamp specifications to allow a functioning lamp that emits red or flashing amber light visible from 500 feet to the rear as an alternative to or in addition to the rear reflector.

• Increases the visibility distance requirement for rear reflectors on bicycles from 500 feet to 600 feet.

• Takes effect July 1, 2015.
