Established sport-shooting ranges in operation before July 1, 2016 are protected from new local ordinances that would prohibit their continued operation within existing geographic boundaries.

Ranges qualify for protection if constructed to prevent projectiles from crossing property boundaries, or meet minimum distance and acreage requirements (150 feet from residences on 10+ acres for shotguns/air guns, or 300 feet from residences on 50+ acres for rifles/pistols).

Protected ranges may repair, remodel, reconstruct damaged facilities, expand membership and public participation, and expand or increase facilities and activities without local government restriction.

Operating rights of sport-shooting ranges cannot be amended, restricted, or terminated due to changes in surrounding property use if the range was previously issued permission to operate.

Subsequent property owners or occupants near established ranges cannot sue to restrain or enjoin normal range operations as a nuisance.
