HB 502 Summary

• Reenacts Sections 73-5-1 through 73-5-43 of Mississippi Code establishing the State Board of Barber Examiners with five members appointed by the Governor from congressional districts, each member must be a practicing barber with 5+ years experience.

• Board members cannot hold elected office, must attend meetings regularly (subject to removal after missing 2 consecutive meetings), and cannot be connected with barbering schools as of July 1, 2004.

• Extends the repeal date of barber licensing provisions from July 1, 2016 to July 1, 2019, allowing the board to continue regulating barber examinations, school licensing, and shop inspections.

• Sets licensing fees including examination fees (up to $55), certificate issuance fees, annual renewal fees (up to $45 for barbers, $50 for instructors), and shop license fees of up to $15 per chair.

• Establishes grounds for license suspension or revocation including felony conviction, malpractice, infectious disease, drug addiction, immoral conduct, and failure to comply with support orders.
