HB 709 Summary

• Establishes state minimum wage at $15.00 per hour for most employees, effective July 1, 2016.

• Sets minimum wage at $3.62 per hour for tipped employees who customarily and regularly receive more than $30.00 per month in tips.

• Requires overtime compensation at not less than 1.5 times the regular rate of pay for employees earning $455.00 or less per week, and exempts manual laborers, law enforcement, and most non-management employees from overtime exemptions regardless of salary.

• Prohibits counties and municipalities from establishing their own minimum wage rates or mandatory paid leave requirements, reserving wage policy decisions to the state legislature.

• Brings forward nine existing Mississippi Code sections for possible amendment to align with the new minimum wage law.
