MS SB2164

Amends Mississippi Code Section 97-17-41 to classify theft of controlled substances, legend drugs (prescription drugs), or firearms as grand larceny regardless of their value, with penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment or $10,000 fine.

Establishes three tiers of grand larceny penalties based on property value: $1,000-$4,999 (up to 5 years), $5,000-$24,999 (up to 10 years), and $25,000+ (up to 20 years).

Increases penalties for theft from churches, synagogues, temples, and other places of worship: $1,000-$24,999 (up to 10 years) and $25,000+ (up to 20 years).

Makes technical corrections to motor vehicle larceny statute (Section 97-17-42) and petit larceny statute (Section 97-17-43), including changing "Penitentiary" to "Department of Corrections custody" throughout.

Takes effect July 1, 2016.
