MS SB2701

Requires the State Board of Education to replace the Mississippi College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core) beginning with the 2016-2017 school year with ELA standards from 2010 versions used in California, Indiana, Massachusetts, Texas, or the 2010 Massachusetts ELA draft standards.

Requires adoption of 2010 mathematics standards from California, Florida, Indiana, or Massachusetts as replacements for Common Core mathematics standards.

Prohibits adoption of nationally-developed curriculum standards (including Next Generation Science Standards, National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies, and National Health Education Standards) without public hearings in each congressional district, open comment periods, and joint legislative committee approval followed by legislative action.

Mandates that Mississippi retain sole control over curriculum standards development and revision, and prohibits state education entities or officials from joining consortiums or entering agreements with federal agencies or private entities that would cede control over curriculum standards and student assessments to outside entities.

Takes effect July 1, 2016.
