Students who fail the MAP assessment after three attempts may enroll in an alternative exit course and take an alternate assessment to satisfy graduation requirements for a standard diploma.

Alternate assessments must be directly related to the alternative exit course and administered through enrollment and instruction in that course, which may be offered through distance learning outside the normal school day.

Students with disabilities who cannot meet MAP assessment requirements due to their disability may complete an alternative exit course and, upon satisfactory completion and meeting their Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) goals, receive a passing MAP score for standard diploma purposes.

Students with severe cognitive disabilities are excluded from this alternative pathway and must take the Mississippi Alternative Assessment instead.

The act takes effect July 1, 2017.
