House Bill 820 Summary

• Establishes Mississippi state minimum wage at $10.00 per hour for all employers, effective July 1, 2017.

• Exempts tipped employees from minimum wage requirement, allowing employers to pay tipped workers $3.62 per hour if they customarily receive more than $30.00 per month in tips.

• Requires overtime compensation at 1.5 times the regular rate for employees earning $455.00 or less per week, plus manual laborers, blue collar workers, police officers, firefighters, and other non-management employees regardless of salary.

• Prohibits counties and municipalities from establishing their own minimum wage or mandatory vacation/sick day requirements to ensure uniform wage standards across the state.

• Brings forward nine existing Mississippi Code sections for possible amendment, including provisions on auditor internships, election manager training, school employee leave, and human trafficking.
