Dr. Norman C. Nelson, leader of the University of Mississippi Medical Center for 21 years, passed away on April 21, 2016, at age 86.

Transformed the Medical Center from two health professional schools into a nationally respected institution with four schools, a major teaching hospital, and expanded research program during his 1973-1994 tenure.

Oversaw construction of 18 new buildings and the largest funded physical plant expansion package in Mississippi's educational history.

Received numerous honors including the 1985 Herman Glazier Award as Outstanding Public Administrator, 1989 Tulane School of Medicine Outstanding Alumnus Award, and 2013 Hall of Fame election by the University of Mississippi Alumni Association.

Legislature mourns his passing and extends sympathy to his surviving family, including his wife Annie Lee of 61 years and three children.
