Part-time law enforcement officers in municipalities must be compensated only according to amounts prescribed in Mississippi Code Section 45-6-3(d), with no scheduling for excess hours or pay.

Municipal police chiefs are prohibited from scheduling part-time officers to work beyond the time and compensation limits set in state law.

The mayor, city clerk, and police chief must provide written notice to the board of aldermen or city council at least 10 business days before the claims docket approval if a part-time officer reaches maximum compensation.

Board members or city council members who vote to pay part-time officers above the state-prescribed maximum become personally liable for the excess compensation amount.

The act takes effect July 1, 2018, and brings forward existing provisions in Mississippi Code regarding mayor-council and council-manager government structures.
