Removes the requirement that deputy sheriffs must be qualified electors of the State of Mississippi.

Maintains existing requirements that deputy sheriffs must be at least 21 years old and cannot have been convicted of a felony.

Requires sheriffs to determine that appointees are of good moral character and capable of fairly and impartially enforcing state law before appointment.

Updates gender-neutral language throughout the statute to use "or her" and "the office of sheriff" in place of gendered pronouns.

Effective July 1, 2018.
