MS SB2656

Adds a new definition of "inmate" as a person confined in a prison, jail, or other correctional institution to Section 97-3-82 of Mississippi Code.

Creates a specific felony offense of extortion by an inmate who obtains or attempts to obtain property from another inmate, family member, or other person through threats of bodily injury, criminal offense, or revelation of private information.

Applies the same threat-based extortion standards to inmates as existing extortion law, including threats to commit criminal offenses or reveal embarrassing information not previously public.

Takes effect July 1, 2018.
