House Bill 7 Summary

• Prohibits any appointed or elected public officer from taking an active part in partisan political campaigns or participating in any political activities of any kind, with violators subject to removal from office and a fine of up to $200.

• Amends Section 25-9-103 to include language prohibiting appointed and elected public officers from engaging in partisan political campaigns or political activities.

• Brings forward existing statutes addressing political activity restrictions for welfare department employees, civil service employees, and emergency management personnel with their current prohibitions intact.

• Establishes that violations constitute a misdemeanor offense, enforceable through district attorney prosecution under Section 97-13-37.

• Takes effect July 1, 2019.
