Candidates for municipal, county, or county district offices must be residents of the area they seek to represent for two years immediately before election day, except in municipalities with fewer than 1,000 residents according to the latest federal census.

Candidates for Transportation Commissioner and District Attorney must be residents of their respective state districts for five years immediately preceding election day.

Candidates for Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce must be residents of Mississippi for five years immediately before election day.

Candidates must prove residency requirements in their qualifying information or provide absolute proof they will meet requirements by election day.

All residency requirements apply to elections held on or after January 1, 2020, and the bill takes effect July 1, 2019.
