HB 1198 Summary

• Municipal primary elections shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of August 2021, and every four years thereafter, with runoff elections held three weeks later if necessary.

• Municipal general elections shall be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November 2021, and every four years thereafter.

• Candidates for municipal office must pay the qualifying fee by 5:00 p.m. on March 1 of the election year, with payments only accepted between January 1 and March 1.

• Officers elected at municipal elections shall take office on the first day of January (rather than July) following the general election, except those elected in 2017 shall serve extended terms of four years and six months.

• Conforming amendments made to multiple sections of Mississippi Code governing commission form, council form, mayor-council form, and council-manager form municipal governments.
