House Bill 171 - Mississippi Minimum Wage Law

• Establishes state minimum wage of $8.25 per hour, effective July 1, 2020.

• Exempts employers with tipped employees from minimum wage requirement; tipped employees must receive minimum of $3.62 per hour.

• Requires overtime compensation at 1.5 times the regular rate for employees earning $455 or less per week, including manual laborers, law enforcement, and most non-managerial workers regardless of salary.

• Prohibits counties and municipalities from establishing mandatory living wage rates or minimum vacation/sick day requirements; reserves wage policy authority to the Mississippi Legislature.

• Brings forward nine existing code sections related to State Auditor internships, school employee leave, election administration, and other matters for possible amendment.
