House Bill 223 Summary

• Prohibits relocation, removal, disturbance, alteration, renaming, or rededication of statues, monuments, memorials, or nameplates on public property unless specifically authorized by an act of the Legislature.

• Applies to structures dedicated to or named for historical figures, historical events, or organizations on state, local, municipal, or county-owned public property.

• Removes the previous exception that allowed moving memorials for preservation, protection, repair, or restoration purposes.

• Exempts items, structures, or areas on property owned by the Mississippi Transportation Commission that may interfere with construction, maintenance, or operation of public transportation facilities.

• Takes effect upon passage.
