MS SB2204

Amends Mississippi Code Section 17-25-11 to allow certified law enforcement officers employed by counties or municipalities to use official police vehicles during off-duty private security work, in addition to uniforms and firearms already permitted.

Requires individual approval on an employee-by-employee basis from the municipal governing authority and chief executive (for municipal officers) or the county sheriff (for deputy sheriffs), with approval documented in public meeting minutes.

Mandates that the approving authority determine the private employment will not bring disrepute to the jurisdiction or law enforcement and that using the uniform, weapon, and vehicle promotes public interest.

Requires private employers to hold the jurisdiction harmless, fully indemnify it for all expenses and losses arising from the officer's actions, and name the jurisdiction as a named insured on general liability and automobile liability policies.

Effective July 1, 2020.
