SB 2787 Summary

• Consolidates and reorganizes existing distinctive motor vehicle license tag programs for veterans into a unified framework effective July 1, 2020, with prior issuance authority ending June 30, 2020.

• Authorizes distinctive tags for honorably discharged veterans, Bronze Star recipients, Vietnam veterans with Vietnam Service Ribbon, veteran motorcyclists, Iraq veterans, Afghanistan veterans, Navy and Marine Corps Medal recipients, and combat veterans.

• Establishes $30 annual fee for distinctive tags, with $24 deposited to Mississippi Veterans Affairs fund for indigent veterans and nursing homes, $1 to Mississippi Burn Care Fund, $2 to State Highway Fund, and $1 to special fund created in Section 27-19-44.2.

• Creates Gold Star license tags for families of service members killed on active duty after September 11, 2001, with one tag each issued to the mother and unremarried spouse exempt from all taxes and fees.

• Amends Section 27-51-41 to clarify ad valorem tax exemptions for vehicles owned by Gold Star family members.
