MS SB2230

Authorizes sheriffs to own, possess, install, operate and monitor electronic or mechanical devices for intercepting wire, oral or other communications, previously limited to the Bureau of Narcotics.

Requires sheriffs to designate in writing which deputies are responsible for possession, installation, operation and monitoring of interception devices.

Allows sheriffs to request prosecutors to apply for court orders authorizing interception of communications, following the same procedures and requirements as the Bureau of Narcotics.

Requires sheriffs to submit annual reports to the Mississippi Administrative Office of Courts detailing all intercepts conducted, including number of personnel involved, arrests made, and total costs incurred.

Takes effect July 1, 2022.
