MS HB1394

Amends Mississippi Code Section 17-25-11 to include Mississippi Highway Patrol officers in the provision allowing certified law enforcement officers to wear official uniforms and use official firearms and vehicles while performing private security services during off-duty hours.

Requires the Colonel of the Mississippi Highway Patrol to approve use of uniforms, weapons, and vehicles by highway patrol officers on an individual employee-by-employee basis, with approval proceedings and minutes to be public records.

Requires the Colonel to determine that proposed private security employment will not bring disrepute to the highway patrol or law enforcement generally, and that use of official equipment promotes the public interest.

Mandates that private security employers obtain general liability and automobile liability insurance naming the Mississippi Highway Patrol as a named insured, and must indemnify and hold harmless the state for any claims, expenses, or vehicle damage arising from the officer's private security work.

Effective July 1, 2023.
