House Bill 1473 Summary

• Brings forward Section 63-5-33 of the Mississippi Code of 1972 regarding vehicle axle and combined weight limits for possible amendments, effective July 1, 2023.

• Increases the maximum gross vehicle weight for vehicles operating with a harvest permit from 84,000 pounds to 88,000 pounds under the new effective date, while maintaining a 10 percent tolerance allowance.

• Maintains existing weight limitations for tandem axles (34,000 pounds each) and overall combined weight restrictions (80,000 pounds maximum) with distance-based load tables for multi-axle vehicles.

• Allows vehicles hauling agricultural products, sand, gravel, and recyclable materials within a 100-mile radius to carry increased weights with specified tolerances, except on interstate highways where restrictions are prohibited.

• Permits natural gas-fueled vehicles to exceed gross weight limits by up to 2,000 pounds on interstate highways to account for the weight difference between natural gas and diesel fueling systems.
