House Bill 615 Summary

• Law enforcement agencies must notify the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation when a law enforcement officer is implicated in an officer-involved death, and the Bureau must investigate the circumstances.

• The Attorney General receives investigation results and determines whether evidence should be presented to a grand jury.

• If grand jury presentation is required, the Attorney General appoints a district attorney from outside the county where the death occurred to serve as special prosecutor and handle any resulting criminal charges.

• Defines "officer-involved death" as a death resulting directly from an act or omission of a law enforcement officer acting within the scope of their duties, whether on or off duty.

• Bill takes effect July 1, 2023.
