Amends Mississippi Code Section 97-3-7 to add athletic umpires to the list of persons whose assault is elevated to aggravated assault charges.

Simple assault on an athletic umpire is punishable by a fine up to $1,000 or imprisonment up to five years, or both.

Aggravated assault on an athletic umpire is punishable by a fine up to $5,000 or imprisonment up to thirty years, or both.

The provision applies when the umpire is serving in that capacity at an athletic event at the time of assault.

Effective date: July 1, 2023.
