Amends Section 97-37-5 of Mississippi Code to permit persons convicted of nonviolent felonies to possess and use firearms and deadly weapons (bowie knives, dirk knives, butcher knives, switchblade knives, metallic knuckles, blackjacks, and firearm mufflers/silencers) for defense of their residence or motor vehicle.

Requires that individuals prove they reside in the home or own the motor vehicle where the firearm or weapon is located for the exemption to apply.

Maintains existing prohibition on firearm and weapon possession by those convicted of violent felonies unless they receive a pardon, federal relief from disability, or a state certificate of rehabilitation.

Establishes felony penalties of a fine up to $5,000 and/or 1 to 10 years imprisonment for violations of the firearm and weapons possession law.

Takes effect July 1, 2023.
