Expands Section 97-17-51 to include cats and other pets alongside dogs in the felony theft statute, maintaining penalties of up to $500 fine or six months county jail, or one to two years in state penitentiary.

Adds cats and other animals to Section 97-17-61's unlawful taking statute, which applies when taking does not constitute larceny, with penalties of up to $1,000 fine or one year in county jail.

Requires courts to order restitution for any property damage resulting from violations of Section 97-17-61.

Allows guilty verdicts under the unlawful taking statute to be rendered under a larceny indictment if evidence does not support a larceny conviction.

Takes effect July 1, 2023.
