Senate Bill 2236 Summary

• Authorizes the Department of Public Safety to pay death benefits for law enforcement officers and firefighters in cases of unforeseen or unprecedented circumstances upon legislative appropriation, in addition to the standard $100,000 benefit for covered causes of death.

• Allows the Commissioner of Public Safety to establish a life insurance policy as an alternative to the Law Enforcement Officers and Fire Fighters Death Benefits Trust Fund and permits use of Uninsured Motorist Identification Fund monies to pay premiums.

• Grants the Mississippi Justice Information Center authority to apply for grants to purchase Live Scan equipment and requires all law enforcement agencies to utilize any equipment provided by the center.

• Adopts the National Crime Prevention and Privacy Compact to facilitate interstate exchange of criminal history information for noncriminal justice purposes.

• Replaces permanent driver's license kiosks or license examiners in county seats with public access computers for Driver Service Bureau website access and repeals the automatic repealer on the Public Safety Verification and Enforcement Act.

• Exempts motor vehicle insurance verification system records from Mississippi Public Records Act disclosure requirements.
