SB 2500 Summary

• Establishes a statewide recall procedure for U.S. Senate and House members, state officials, legislators, and local elected officials in Mississippi, replacing existing local recall provisions.

• Requires 35% of electors who voted in the last election for an office to sign a recall petition; for statewide offices, signatures must be distributed proportionally across all congressional districts.

• Prohibits recall applications during the first 180 days of a term or within the final 6 months; recall elections must be held 50-65 days after petition certification, or coincide with an already-scheduled election.

• Makes it a misdemeanor (punishable by up to $500 fine) to give or receive money for signing petitions, sign fraudulently, coerce signers, or sign a name other than one's own.

• Repeals Mississippi Code Sections 25-5-3 through 25-5-37 governing the previous local official recall procedure; effective July 1, 2023.
