HB 276 Summary

• Suspends voting rights upon conviction of vote fraud, crimes listed in Mississippi Constitution Section 241, or crimes interpreted as disenfranchising by Attorney General opinions, but automatically restores voting rights once all sentencing requirements are satisfied.

• Amends voter registration and election management provisions to require automatic restoration of voters' names into the Statewide Elections Management System, state voter roll, and county pollbooks when sentencing requirements are completed.

• Modifies county registrar and election commissioner duties to remove names from voting rolls upon conviction (with voting rights suspended) and automatically restore them upon completion of sentencing rather than permanent disenfranchisement.

• Updates the Statewide Elections Management System to receive and process reports of convictions causing voting rights suspension and reports of satisfied sentencing requirements allowing automatic restoration.

• Takes effect July 1, 2024.
